Telehealth physician work tied to Texas (TX). Texas participates in the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact, and its telemedicine coverage-parity rule has been on the books since SB 1107 (2017). Virtual clinics, payer care teams, and health systems hire physicians for video visits, remote triage, and asynchronous care for Texas patients.
Texas combines sheer scale with wide rural stretches, which makes virtual coverage a practical staffing tool for health systems that cannot recruit on-site clinicians to every community.
Texas is a member state of the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact and is a Nurse Licensure Compact state, so physicians and nurses with those multistate credentials can take Texas work without a Texas-only license. Payment is a different question: SB 1107 (2017) wrote coverage parity into Insurance Code section 1455.004, requiring a health plan to cover a telemedicine service on the same basis and to the same extent as the in-person version, but the statute does not fix a rate, which is why the standard trackers score Texas as having no payment-parity mandate.
Prescribing in Texas turns on the practitioner-patient relationship. Occupations Code section 111.007 holds telehealth to the same standard of care as an in-person visit, and section 111.006 recognizes a relationship formed through a preexisting relationship or a call coverage agreement. Layered on top, the DEA's telemedicine flexibilities, extended through December 31, 2026, permit remote prescribing of controlled substances without a prior in-person examination.
