Telehealth Physician Jobs in California

California is not a member of the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact and not one of the Nurse Licensure Compact jurisdictions, so a clinician treating a patient located in the state has to hold a full California license rather than a compact privilege. The payout rules are friendlier than the licensing rules: AB 744 (2019) added Health and Safety Code section 1374.14 and Insurance Code section 10123.855, which require plans and insurers to reimburse a service delivered by telehealth at the same rate as the same service delivered in person, for contracts issued, amended or renewed on or after January 1, 2021.

Prescribing is where California is looser than most states. Business and Professions Code section 2242(a) treats prescribing without an appropriate prior examination as unprofessional conduct, but the same section says an appropriate prior examination does not require a synchronous interaction and may be satisfied by telehealth or by a self-screening tool or questionnaire, as long as the standard of care is met. The DEA's temporary telemedicine rule keeps remote prescribing of controlled substances legal without a prior in-person visit through December 31, 2026.

The engagement mix skews toward part-time, per-diem and locum coverage: one posting mentions 1099, one per diem, one locum tenens, and five are tagged full-time. Physician assistants (18 listings) and physicians (8) make up most of the demand.
